1. Beat the margarine, superfine sugar and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
2. Add the eggs a little at a time, beating the mixture well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract.
3. Sift the plain and whole wheat flour and the Baking soda into the mixture, tipping in the bran remaining in the sieve. Sprinkle in the chocolate and mix together gently but thoroughly with a metal spoon until the ingredients are combined.
4. Put half-tablespoons of the mixture onto baking sheets lined with nonstick baking paper, spacing them well apart. Bake in the heated oven for about 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks and store in an airtight container.
These American-style cookies, speckled with flakes of chocolate, are at their crisp, light best when just cooled from the oven.
