Tapas of Almonds, Olives and Cheese

These three simple ingredients are lightly flavoured to create a delicious Spanish tapas medley that is perfect for a casual starter or nibbles to serve with pre-dinner drinks.

Hot chocolate and banana

Milky drinks are wonderfully refreshing when ice-cold and comforting when hot. A summer afternoon is the time for serving tall glasses of iced coffee to the grown-ups and a pale froth of banana milk shake to the children. Young and old alike will enjoy cups of hot chocolate flavoured with banana and vanilla, and given a spicy edge with cinnamon.

Caraway Bread Sticks

Ideal to nibble with drinks, these can be made with all sorts of other seeds - try cumin seeds, poppy seeds or celery seeds.

Spiced cranberry shrub

Shrub is a name borrowed from the Arabs fruit sherbet drinks. This one is irresistible — deep, glowing pink, ice-cold and refreshingly tart.

Brandied Egg Nog

This frothy blend of eggs, milk and spirits definitely comes into the nightcap category of drinks.

Grapefruit and mint spritzer

Drinks are more fun when they gently prickle the palate. The grapefruit spritzer (near right) prickles with sparkling water, while the tea punch and jug of lemon and lime make doubly certain by adding ginger as well.
